I don’t know where Ramirez’ family comes from (he was born in the Phiilippines), but he isn’t exempt from being called out for slightly racist caricatures of Latinos. Yes, I know it’s a movie reference, but it’s still problematic.
Also, he seems to be running out of ideas, because I hhave no idea why the Treasure of Sierra Madre is topical all of the sudden, but whatever, we have another thing to slap the SPENDING! tag on.

Not much to commment. This is just fucking lazy. I know there’s the Iowa primary that is important because the US electoral system is about as outdated as the imperial measurement system, but just slapping a map of Iowa a comic does not make.
I’ve adressed the whole “spending” boogeyman before. In summmary, everyone says they’re for cutting spending, but when it comes to actually doing it, they can’t find what exactly is that huge surplus that they want to cut without actually crippling a part of the whole social contract.

Henry Payne is another artist I notice now and then. I give him some credit for style, and usually his arguments are not entirely out of this world, but this one needs to be adressed.

The “spending” boogeyman in conservative politics. What GOP and other right wing politicians seem to missunderstand, is that a governemnt uses a lot of money, by default. Most of it in the US goes to defense (an overbloated mess if anything in the US government), but a lot of it goes to keep the physical and social infrastructure working. When COnservatives complain about sppending, they almost always complain about welfare. Their arguments completely dehumanize the millions that rely on some sort of government aid, for a number of reasons, dumbed down just to be “laziness”.

What caused the Greek collapse? Not spending, despite what sensationalist European newspapers like to tell about the huge pension plans for Greek public sector workers (lies, lies, lies). The Greek collapse is part result of the long term corruption in an unstable society (because of the military junta and how it crippled the development of a civil society), the massive debts taken under said Junta, and EU accepting Greece as a member despite of their bad economy, out of ideological reasons and lack of foresight about the economy. The Greek economy is also a textbook example of unstable growth: in the 2000’s, the Greek economy recovered fast, but the recovery was based largely on investments, non-material industry, and later construction (which isn’t as concrete as one would think, when it ocmes to indicators of economic recovery). This resulted in a lot of money in the markets, but very little stability, or any industry to fal back on in time of recession.

For pointless tags… we got “USA” on the guy with the Uncle Sam hat (subtle), the cup labeled “Greece”, and… oh, yeah the honking big bottle with a skull and the words SPENDING ROT GUT. Yeah, mega-subtle.
